The Colloquium ‘Stages of Ethnic and Nationalist Violence: Perspectives of the Global “North” and “South”’, which took place on 1 November 2019 at the Institute of Formal and Applied Linguistics, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic, succeeded in bringing together researchers and practitioners from various institutions and introducing cases of ethnic violence occurring in parts of the world that may usually escape the focus of public and scientific discourses dominating the transatlantic space.

The European spacecraft has successfully passed last tests at the IABG test centre near Munich. Electronics from Charles University, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, is also on-board. The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports submitted official application on behalf of the Czech Republic for joining the European Research Infrastructure Consortium DARIAH ERIC (Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities). The large research infrastructure LINDAT/CLARIAH-CZ, hosted by the Charles University, will become the Czech national coordinator of research activities developed within the DARIAH ERIC.
Faculty of Mathematics and Physics is saddened by the passing of Professor Emeritus Petr Sgall, DrSc, dr. h. c. mult. aged 93, a long-term member of the School of Computer Science of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics and the founder of the Institute of Formal and Applied Linguistics, who passed away on May 28, 2019 in Prague.
According to the standard model of cosmology, most galaxies contain a great amount of dark matter. Astrophysicists of the Charles University in Prague postulated that both galaxies dominated by dark matter and galaxies lacking dark matter have to exist. An international team of scientists, also including Charles University, now verified this so-called dual dwarf galaxy theorem with one of the most modern galaxy evolution simulations. The results are in disagreement with observations and challenge the standard model of cosmology. The study will appear in the Journal Astronomy & Astrophysics and is already available online.

An international team from the Forschungszentrum Jülich and the Technical University of Munich led by Dr. Petr Cermak (now Charles University of Prague) shed unexpected new light on the abundance of magnetoelastic interactions in solids. Using inelastic neutron scattering on a single crystal of the rare-earth intermetallic compound CeAuAl3 revealed, that electron-phonon interaction can lead to creation of the new states in the matter, even in the case of small and hard to measure interactions.
