Exhibition Theme
Inspired by portraits of prominent Jewish figures and their life stories. Hesham Malik captured moments – fragments - of these rich life stories on screen, and, as he says, "stopped them in time to stand here as indicators of time". Malik has been studying the subject for over 2 decades since his university studies in Canada. He had the opportunity to visit many Jewish communities and Holocaust survivors in America and here in Europe. With this exhibition at Charles University, the painter begins the era of exhibitions dedicated to Jews around the world. The exhibition Imprints offers visitors the opportunity to look beneath the surface of clichés and stereotypes associated with the views on the Jewish community and their thinking.
Téma výstavy
Inspirován portréty významných židovských osobností a jejich životním vyprávěním Hesham Malik zachytil na plátno momenty – fragmenty - z těchto bohatých životních osudů. Jak sám říká: „zastavil je v čase, aby zde stály jako ukazatelé doby“. Malik se studiu tohoto tématu věnuje více než dvě dekády již od dob svých vysokoškolských studií v Kanadě. Měl možnost navštívit mnoho židovských komunit a přeživších holokaustu v Americe i zde v Evropě. Touto výstavou na Karlově univerzitě začíná malíř etapu obrazových výstav věnovaných Židům po celém světě. Výstava Otisky svým návštěvníkům nabízí možnost pohlédnout pod povrch klišé a stereotypů spojených s názory na židovskou komunitu a jejich myšlení.

About the artist
Malik's artistic expression is characterized as fresh, with a much-elaborated relationship to the form and design. He is an artist whose main form of representation comes from figurative abstraction. The theme of his creation simply includes the ordinary life of people – yet the analysis and expression of this “everydayness” is unique. Malik’s intention is to expose himself to people in order to capture their mentality, stereotypes and habitat. From these far-world experiences, he has gained the philosophical and ethnographic knowledge of many different cultures. Malik is a narrator and critique. He invites the viewer to leave the comfort zone and exposes himself to the inner dialogue.
O autorovi
Umělecké vyjádření Heshama Malika je charakterizováno jako svěží, s propracovaným vztahem k formě a designu. Je to umělec, jehož hlavní forma reprezentace vychází z obrazové abstrakce. Přesto, že tématem jeho tvorby je prostý běžný život lidí, dokáže tuto „každodennost“ analyzovat a vyjádřit jedinečným způsobem. Malikův záměr je otevřít se lidem, vnímat a zachytit jejich mentalitu, poznat jejich stereotypy a životní prostředí. Z těchto zážitků v různých vzdálených koutech světa načerpal filozofické a etnografické znalosti mnoha různých kultur. Malik je vypravěč a kritik. Vyzývá diváka, aby opustil komfortní zónu a vystavil se vnitřnímu dialogu.
