Jarníkovská přednáška prof. Hairera
Dne 2. října se konala již po osmnácté tradiční přednáška odkazující k osobnosti matematika prof. Vojtěcha Jarníka. Proslovil ji tentokrát držitel Fieldsovy medaile prof. Martin Hairer z Imperial College London.
Martin Hairer, který svoji Jarníkovskou přednášku nazval „Taming Infinities“, je profesorem na Imperial College London. Doktorát získal v roce 2001 (University of Geneva) a poté působil na mnoha hostujících a zvaných pozicích (Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences, Institute for Advanced Study Princeton, École Normale Supérieure Paris, Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques, University of Toulouse).
Je členem vědeckých rad významných institucí (Institute Henri Poincaré, Oberwolfach Research Institute for Mathematics, Hausdorff Center for Mathematics) a působí také v redakčních radách předních odborných časopisů (Probability Theory and Related Fields, Communications in Mathematical Physics, Annales de l’Institut Henri Poincaré). Zabývá se různými oblastmi teorie pravděpodobnosti včetně stochastické dynamiky a studia stochastických parciálních diferenčních rovnic.
Za svou práci získal řadu ocenění, zejména Fermatovu cenu (2013) a Fieldsovu medaili (2014).
Abstrakt přednášky:
Some physical and mathematical theories have the unfortunate feature that if one takes them at face value, many quantities of interest appear to be infinite! What’s worse, this doesn’t just happen for some exotic theories, but in the standard theories describing some of the most fundamental aspects of nature. Various techniques, usually going under the common name of “renormalization” have been developed over the years to address this, allowing mathematicians and physicists to tame these infinities. We will tip our toes into some of the conceptual and mathematical aspects of these techniques and we will see how they have recently been used to study equations whose meaning was not even clear until now.
