Charles University
Faculty of Mathematics and Physics
Charles University, the oldest university in Central Europe, was founded in 1348 by the Holy Roman Emperor and Czech King Charles IV, in what is now called the Old Town – the very centre of the city and the oldest part of Prague. To this day, the only surviving original Gothic building, Carolinum, houses the University’s administration and the Aula Magna, a big hall for ceremonial assemblies. The rest of the university occupies historical buildings in the centre or is scattered in various Prague districts.
The four original faculties (Theology, Law, Medicine, and Arts) have multiplied into sixteen, with the current number of 34,000 students and 3,400 teaching and research staff. After the dramatic and repressive periods of German occupation (1939–1945) and the communist regime (1948–1989), Charles University has become an autonomous institution of higher learning, observing the principles of academic freedoms as declared in the Magna Carta of European Universities, maintaining and developing academic cooperation with 125 universities around the world. Since 1990, the University has been actively involved in various European educational and research programmes. The year 1998 marked both the University´s 650th anniversary and its inclusion into SOCRATES, with steadily growing number of student and teacher exchanges.
The Faculty of Mathematics and Physics was established in 1952 and it currently offers a variety of study programmes in mathematics, physics, and computer science with a number of lectures taught in English.
