SUSE a strategic partner of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics
SUSE, a multinational company that creates well-known Linux distributions openSUSE, SUSE Linux Enterprise and various other open source products, took up the current plentiful cooperation and became a new strategic partner in a partnership programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University.
The dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics Prof. Jan Kratochvíl and the regional manager of the SUSE company for the Czech Republic and Slovakia Miroslav Kořen signed a contract of new strategic partnership at the end of November in the building of the School of Computer Science at the Lesser Town Square. It is not by far the first cooperation of the Faculty and SUSE but this new contract will enable both sides to involve students during and also after their studies on a more intense level.
Thank to this cooperation the employees of SUSE will have the chance to offer students topics for their bachelor and master thesis and also offer topics for software projects which will give them experience with open source software development and also a professional leadership by these IT experts. The new contract will also intensify the cooperation on relevant school subjects, the SUSE company may sponsor students’ science contest or give the awards or even provide them with scientific grants. The SUSE company and the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics also agreed on the cooperation on the faculty’s Mentoring programme.
According to the dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics Prof. Jan Kratochvíl, even the former informal cooperation with SUSE was very contributive. “We highly appreciate the fact that apart from the number of people from our faculty working for SUSE as software engineers, there are also on the contrary with other companies many theoretical computer scientists employed. The spectrum of the SUSE’s interest is wide as well as the interest of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics,” said Kratochvíl.
Miroslav Kořen, the regional manager of the SUSE company for the Czech Republic said during the signature making ceremony: “Us from SUSE, out of the new strategic partnership we expect to intensify the current cooperation. Our goal is to involve students of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics in activities of SUSE not only in community open source projects development. We also believe to offer the Faculty graduates the attractive work environment.”
By signing the contract of strategic partnership between the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics and SUSE, the cooperation changed from an informal cooperation between the employees of SUSE and the Academia of the Faculty to a formal cooperation of two institutions.
