Recognition of English Language Examinations from other institutions

If a student has passed an examination at Charles University, or at another institution of higher education in the Czech Republic or abroad, within the last 10 years (see Code of Study and Examination of Charles University), the exam can be recognised by the Dean of the Faculty. In these cases students should apply in writing.

The application for recognition must be accompanied by the syllabus of English courses, including a statement about the content of the examination passed. This examination will be recognised if the content and the level is equivalent to that held at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at the bachelor‘s level .

The written part may be replaced by the following language exams or certificates:

  1. Equivalent language examinations at other universities and colleges in the Czech Republic with the result of 1–2, not older than 10 years;
  2. Equivalent language examinations at other universities and colleges abroad, not older than 10 years;
  3. State language examinations passed in the Czech Republic (General State Language Examination, Specialized State Language Examination for translators, Specialized State Language Examination for interpreters, not older than 10 years);
  4. Internationally recognised language certificates:
    1. Cambridge English – CAE, CPE (FCE is not accepted, even with Grade “A”)
    2. IELTS (with the result of 7 points or more)
    3. TOEFL (ITP – min. 627 points, iBT – min. 95 points)

In the case of other internationally recognised language examinations, students may apply for an assessment in the Department of Language Education.

However, students whose previous examinations have been recognised must still sit for the specialized English section and receive a minimum score of 70%.

They must then sit for the oral part of the exam.

Either the original certificate or a verified copy must be submitted to the secretary at the Department of Language Education no later than 14 days before the examination. An exception is made for IELTS and Cambridge English certificates, which may be sent by email to miloslava.tarasova@matfyz.cuni.cz no later than 14 days before the examination. Please include the following information:

IELTS: Attach a scan of the certificate. In the body of the email, include the Test Report Form Number.

Cambridge English: Attach a scan of the certificate. In the body of the email, include your date of birth and Verification Number.

(Requirements for the oral part of the examination can be found under English Exam Requirements).
