Recognition of English Language Examinations from other institutions

If a student has passed an examination at Charles University, or at another institution of higher education in the Czech Republic or abroad, within the last 10 years (see Code of Study and Examination of Charles University), the exam can be recognised by the Dean of the Faculty. In these cases students should apply in writing.

The application for recognition must be accompanied by the syllabus of English courses, including a statement about the content of the examination passed. This examination will be recognised if the content and the level is equivalent to that held at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at the bachelor‘s level .

The written part may be replaced by the following language exams or certificates:

  1. Language examinations at other universities and colleges in the Czech Republic with the result of 1–2, not older than 10 years;
  2. Language examinations in other universities and colleges abroad, not older than 10 years;
  3. State language examinations passed in the Czech Republic (General State Language Examination, Specialized State Language Examination for translators, Specialized State Language Examination for interpreters, not older than 10 years);
  4. Internationally recognised language certificates:
    1. Cambridge ESOL – FCE (grade A), CAE, CPE
    2. IELTS (with the result of 7 points or more)
    3. TOEFL (ITP – min. 627 points, iBT – min. 95 points)

In the case of other internationally recognised language examinations, students may apply for an assessment in the Department of Language Education.

However, students whose previous examinations have been recognised must still sit for the specialized English section and receive a minimum score of 70%.

They must then sit for the oral part of the exam.

Original or verified photocopies of the above-mentioned certificates must be presented to the secretary at the Department of Language Education no later than 14 days before the examination. (Requirements for the oral part of the examination can be found under English Exam Requirements).
