Matfyz Offers Its First Micro-Certificate Course

February 12, 2025

Deep neural networks are increasingly growing through various sectors of industry and services. A new open course, Deep Learning, provides insights into their principles with an emphasis on practical applications. Graduates of the course will receive a so-called micro-certificate.

In recent years, labour market requirements have increasingly necessitated continuous upskilling of employees. Charles University has thus expanded its continuing education offerings by introducing specialized courses, the successful completion of which is recognized with a so-called micro-certificate.

Matfyz is joining this initiative with its first course of that kind, and that is Deep Learning. Participants will gain insights into the current challenges of deep neural networks, which are now achieving outstanding results in image, text, and speech analysis and generation.

The course will cover both theoretical foundations—from the basics to the latest advancements—and practical implementations using Python and the PyTorch framework. Basic knowledge of algebra and Python is required for successful completion, while familiarity with machine learning principles is advantageous.

“Deep learning is increasingly penetrating various fields and becoming an essential component of modern technologies. This course is ideal for developers, data scientists, and other professionals who want to effectively apply neural networks in practice and stay up to date with the latest advancements,” explains Dr. Milan Straka from the Institute of Formal and Applied Linguistics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University.

The Deep Learning course is structured so that students will work either independently or in small teams on weekly assignments. Competitive tasks are also planned, where participants will aim to achieve the best possible results among all submitted solutions.

“We believe that this course format will be engaging for participants and will significantly enhance their practical skills,” adds Dr. Straka.

The first micro-certificates will undoubtedly confirm that knowledge gained at Matfyz is immediately applicable in practice and retains lasting value thanks to a strong theoretical foundation.

Detailed information about the course is available on the Charles University Lifelong study website or directly on the website of the Institute of Formal and Applied Linguistics.

The course begins on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, but registration is open up to March 9, 2025. This course is held in both Czech and English.
