Mathematician Erin Carson has been working at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University since 2018. Dr Carson earned her PhD at the University of California, Berkeley, and concentrates on matrix computations, which are fundamental not only to machine learning applications but also to data and computer science. At the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, she leads her own research group with a special focus on developing new algorithms for supercomputers.

Associate Professor Carson has already received numerous prestigious awards. In 2022, she was awarded an ERC Starting Grant and previously received support through the Charles University Primus programme. This year, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) awarded her the prestigious James H. Wilkinson Prize in Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing. The prize is awarded only once every four years to a single individual worldwide. This year, her list of honours grew even more with the addition of the Gold Memorial Medal awarded by Charles University Rector Milena Králíčková. “I am very grateful for this distinction. It is an honour for me to work at Charles University,” Dr Carson said in fluent Czech as she received the medal.
