DLS&SLS

The Brookhaven Instruments BI-200 SM instrument allows for static and dynamic light scattering measurements on materials in the liquid state.

In the static mode, the angular distribution of scattered light is measured. From this, it is possible to determine the second virial coefficient of particle interaction with the solvent, the mass-average molar mass, and the number-average square of the radius of gyration of the dissolved particles. Particles can include: polymer chains, compact nanoparticles, micelles, vesicles, etc.

In the dynamic mode, the correlation function of scattered light intensity is measured in auto- and cross-polarization modes. This allows for the determination of the distribution of the translational diffusion coefficient, and from it, using the Stokes-Einstein equation, the distribution of the hydrodynamic radius of the particles.

Basic Technical Parameters of the Instrument:

  • Radiation Wavelength: 632.8 nm (He-Ne 35 mW laser).
  • Scattering Angle Range: 8° to 155° in 0.01 ° steps.
  • Sample Volume: 10 to 15 mL (standard vial with 25 mm diameter).
  • 150 μL (special low-volume cell).
  • DLS Correlation Time Range: 25 ns to 1.3 s.
  • Temperature Range: 0 to100 °C, with an accuracy of 0.2 °C.
