As an undergraduate at Sydney University, my devotion to pure mathematics was derailed by reading papers on cybernetics, neural networks and automata theory. This fascination with “Brains, Machines, and Mathematics” led to two complementary lines of research: 1. The study of abstract neural networks tied into developing a rapprochement between automata and systems theory that finally led to applications of category theory with Ernie Manes. This research brought me in contact with several colleagues in Prague in the 1960s and 1970s: Karel Čulík, Jiří Bečvář, Jiří Adámek a Věra Trnková. 2. However, this talk will focus on the neural networks in the brain and the higher-level framework of schema theory. I will briefly present two models: The VISIONS model of visual scene perception, and The TAM-WG model of navigation, without and with the hippocampus. With this I will turn to my current work on When Brains Meet Buildings: A Conversation Between Neuroscience and Architecture (Oxford University Press, 2021) and explain how I have built on these two models to offer new insights on the study of architectural experience and design, linking memory, imagination and navigation with the study of scripts and affordances.

Michael Anthony Arbib se narodil v roce 1940 v Eastbourne v Anglii. Studoval na MIT (PhD. v r. 1963) a posléze působil na předních pracovištích: MIT, Stanford, Amherst; pak až do emeritování působil na Kalifornské univerzitě v San Diegu jako Fletcher Jones profesor informatiky. V současnosti je rovněž emeritním profesorem biomedicínského inženýrství, neurobiologie a psychologie a rovněž je členem Fakulty architektury a designu. Ve většině svých zaměstnání zastával vedoucí funkce a byl iniciátorem výzkumného programu, např. cognitive science, computer and information science, neuroscience and laboratory of perceptual robotics. Prof. Arbib je autorem 410 vědeckých publikací, byl editorem 20 knih a sborniků a 24 monografií. Činnost prof. Arbiba je výrazně mezioborová a zasahuje jak do matematiky a informatiky (připomeňme jeho práce v kategoriální algebře a teorii automatů), tak do oblasti kognitivních věd, fyziologie, neurověd aj. M. Arbib získal za svou práci řadu ocenění. Zmiňme zde čestný doktorát na Univerzitě Západní Austrálie v Perthu (v r. 2004) a Helmholtzovu cenu (v r. 2009). M. Arbib byl rovněž přednášejícím v rámci “The Rouse Ball Lectures for 2001” na Cambridžské univerzitě. Pražské kolokvium prof. Arbiba se koná u příležitosti jeho poslední knihy When Brains Meet Buildings: A Conversation Between Neuroscience and Architecture, která vychází v Oxford University Press v tomto roce. Jeho pobyt je podporován Fulbrightovou nadací a také Interdisciplinárním seminářem topologických studií poetiky umění, krajiny a architektury (ISTS), který se koná na MFF UK a VUT Liberec. V rámci tohoto semináře přednese prof. Arbib další přednášku Architecture, Narrative and Space-Time Action (4. 11. v 17 hod., budova G, VUT Liberec). Desátého listopadu udělí Západočeská univerzita prof. Arbibovi čestný doktorát.
