Homoclinic orbits in perturbed black-hole fieldsV newtonovské i obecně relativistické nebeské mechanice je podstatnou otázkou dlouhodobý vývoj příslušného dynamického systému. |

Elastic strings in general relativityV obecné relativitě je pohyb testovacích hmotných bodů popsán geodetikami. |

Nonlinear ElectrodynamicsNonlinear Electrodynamics (NE) was founded almost a century ago and used mainly as a solution to the problem of divergent field of a point charge in the vicinity of its position (see e.g. [1]) also giving satisfactory self-energy of charged particle. The best-known and frequently used form of the theory was introduced already in 1934 by Born and Infeld [2]. Nice overview with a lot of useful information was given in a book by Plebański [3]. There are different models of Nonlinear Electrodynamics • Born-Infeld (BI) theory • Hoffmann-Born-Infeld (HBI) theory • Logarithmic Lagrangian • Power Maxwell • many other models! |

Geodesic dynamics in the fields of black holes surrounded by discsGeodetický, případně elektro-geodetický pohyb v polích stacionárních, Kerrových-Newmanových černých děr je plně integrabilní, tuto vlastnost však ruší přítomnost dalšího zdroje (byť stacionárního a axiálně symetrického). |

Kundt class of spacetimes in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravityThe aim of this work will be a systematic investigation of the complete class of vacuum and pure radiation solutions to the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity theory with a cosmological constant, which belong to the Kundt family of geometries with vanishing optical scalars. Some particular exact spacetimes of this type have been previously found, but only without the off-diagonal “gyratonic” terms. We will attempt to derive the explicit form of the field equations, and then to proceed with their integration, paving the way for their subsequent analysis. |

Interaction of point charge with moving conductorsCílem práce bude zkoumání zdánlivě jednoduchého systému: volného bodového náboje poblíž nekonečné vodivé desky či drátu. |

1D model of laser-assisted resonant electron scatteringResonances are quasi-bound states of quantum systems (e.g. electron+atom) which are known to enhance or suppress scattering and other transitions in the system. How does the resonant scattering change in the presence of a laser field which allows for absorption of one or more photons? The goal of this work is to understand on simple 1D models the properties of laser-assisted electron scattering on potentials supporting resonances. The student will implement and test a program for numerical solution of the time-dependent Schroedinger equation and compare the transmission probabilities with/without the presence of the field and therefore characterize the effect the laser field has on the resonant scattering. In the future this work permits generalization to 2D models of laser-assisted electron molecule scattering including the nuclear motion. |

Analysis of collisions processes in quantum mechanics using Siegert statesIn quantum mechanics of collision processes the basic quantity that is obtained in experiments is the scattering cross section which is a measure of the strength of interaction between the incoming particle and the target. The scattering cross section depends on the energy of the incoming particle and can have a complicated shape depending on the processes that take place during the collision. For example the process of electron-atom collision can be strongly influenced by formation of so called virtual and resonant states of the electron during the collision. However, an unambiguous identification of these states may be difficult especially in collisions where more channels (such as electronic excitation of the atom) are open. The resonant and virtual states are special cases of so called Siegert states which are solutions of the Schrodinger for complex momenta (energies). In this work we will focus on development of analytic and numerical methods for direct computation of the Siegert states in simple models of quantum mechanical systems. This work will result in the development of a general methodology for a detailed analysis of computed scattering cross sections. This work can be extended by implementation of this approach into sophisticated ab initio codes for studying electron collisions with atoms and molecules. |

Two-electron model of interatomic Coulombic decayInteratomic Coulombic decay (ICD) [1] is auto-ionization relaxation mechanism, bych which an excited atom can efficiently transfer its excess energy to a neighboring atom or molecule. ICD belongs to the class of Feshbach resonances, which are inherently of many-electron character. Theoretical study of such processes requires the use of advanced methods such as many-particle Green's functions. For quantitative computations such methods can be efficient and successful, however, their complexity often prevents detailed understanding of physical aspects of the process. Proposed project is part of a long-term plan to develop a two-dimensional, numerically exactly soluble model which simulates ICD in a system of two electrons localized in potential wells and interacting through an effective pair interaction. Similar models can be used to study ICD in quantum dots and other effectively two-electron semiconductor structures [2,3]. Using this model we can study, e.g., the dependence of the decay widths on the symmetry of initial and final states or the effects of exchange interaction between the electrons on the decay process. After generalization to three electrons it will be possible to study in detail also the recently proposed superexchange mechanism of ICD [4,5], or even interference effects between two overlapping resonance states, leading potentially to an intriguing "bound states in continuum" phenomenon [6]. |

De Sitter special relativityNot only due to non-vanishing cosmological constant it is natural to ask why the fundamental group of transformations in special relativity should be the Poincare group, which is a semidirect product of the Lorentz group and spacetime translations. De Sitter group SO(1,4) has equal dimension and contains standard boosts and rotations, but it has no commuting translational part. This has many implications, that might be studied. |

Dynamical perturbations of triple stellar and planetary systems seen in gravitational waves with LISALISA is an approved space-based mission for detection of mHz gravitational waves to be launched in 2030s. It will detect a number of compact binary stars, which emit gravitational waves on essentially a single frequency. This frequency can be smeared out by finer effects, for example by frequency shifts and light travel time effects for a binary orbiting a distant body (star or a planet) around a common barycenter. These perturbations, if detected, would provide a new probe of certain phenomena such as population of circumbinary planets. Previous investigations of this issue neglected dynamical perturbations to the binary orbit from the distant companion. This will be fixed in this thesis. The goal is to calculate long-term orbits of triple systems composed of stars and planets and estimate gravitational wave signature of these effects detectable by LISA. |

Regular sources of spacetimes with singularitiesPolní rovnice obecné teorie relativity (OTR) jsou nelineární. Navrhovaná metoda by spočívala ve "shlazení" singulární části prostoročasu vhodně hladkou funkcí (lze zapsat analyticky) a numerickém zkoumání výsledku (analytické metody asi nestačí). |

Imprint of individual galaxies on gravitational lensing by galaxy clustersStudent by v rámci práce měl zkoumat gravitační čočkování kupou galaxií a soustředit se na lokální vliv jednotlivých galaxií kupy. Halo dominantní temné hmoty kupy lze popsat profilem Navarra, Frenka a Whitea (NFW), ke kterému lze v základním přiblížení přidat hmotné body představující jednotlivé galaxie. Nejdříve s využitím modelu s jednou galaxií posoudí vliv volby základních parametrů NFW profilu na zjištěné vlastnosti kritických křivek a kaustik. Model poté rozšíří přidáním dalších hmotných bodů a prozkoumá charakter kombinování perturbací od jednotlivých bodů. |

Modelling of quantum dynamics in anharmonic potentials using model of interacting harmonic oscillators.Molecular vibrations are usually described with Born-Oppenheimer approximation. This leads to motion of nuclei in the mean-field of electrons which is called potential energy surface. Dymensionality of such dynamics depends on the number of degrees of freedom of vibrational motion i.e. on the size of the molecule, which is in principle unlimited. Dependence of numerical demands for solution of such system on dimensionality is exponential. There is only small number of analytically solvable cases, for example harmonic vibrations. It this work, student will learn to calculate the bound states and Green´s funcion for 1-3 dimensional models. Main goal is to evaluate precision of approximation in which the general anharmonic model is replaced by system of coupled harmonic potentials which can efficiently be solved by matrix iteration methods. |

Quantization of dynamics of molecular rattleback.Rattleback is a small boat-shaped toy, that is placed on table and spun. If the direction of the spin is "incorrect" the boat starts to vibrate and the direction of the spinning is gradually inverted (see "rattleback" on wikipedia and the videos shown there). Apparent violation of angular momentum conservation is consequence of interaction with the table. The goal of this thesis is to design a molecular system attached to surface with similar behavior |

Mass loss from binary starsMany binary stars can experience catastrophic interaction accompanied by almost instantaneous loss of mass, angular momentum, and energy. This "common envelope" interaction is critical for many pathways of binary evolution leading to tight binaries composed of white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes, including the progenitors of gravitational wave sources. Recently, these events were identified in time-domain surveys of the sky, which brings an unique opportunity to understand this phase by direct modeling of observations of the associated transient brightenings. Recent work on these transients shows that mass loss occurs most likely from the vicinity of the outer Lagrange point (L2) and lasts many orbits. However, the dynamics of gas leaving the binary star has not been fully explored in the setting relevant for the observed events. |

Iterative calculation of vibrational dynamics in electron scattering from moleculeMolecular vibrations are usually described with Born-Oppenheimer approximation, which leads to motion of nuclei in the mean-field of electrons. This approximation must be generalized in the presence of more electronic states or electron scattering states. In the presence of more vibrational modes the effects associated with nontrivial topology of potential energy surface are possible. In this thesis the student will familiarize him(her)self with description of electron scattering from molecules and in case of interest also with multidimensional vibrational dynamics (symmetry, conical intersections, Jahn-Teller effect, Berry phase). The knowledge learned in this thesis may serve as a basis for further work in atomic or molecular physics, particle physics or transport theory in solid state. The student will be introduced to iterative matrix methods for solving the problems of linear algebra and thesis can be solved by student of mathematics. |

Determination of structure of small water clusters using photoelectron spectroscopyMolecular clusters are a type of material with different properties from those of an isolated molecule and a bulk solid. Contemporary experimental techniques (supersonic jet expansion) are capable of preparing clusters of water molecules of various sizes which can serve for example as a model for the immediate environment surrounding the subunits of DNA. However, the experiment is not able to control very well the geometries of the clusters that are prepared. The goal of this project would be to investigate the potential of photoelectron spectroscopy (i.e. photoionization) to reconstruct the cluster geometry. The idea is to generate the cluster’s photoelectron spectrum using a coherent combination of photoionization amplitudes for the constituent molecules of water and to study the spectrum as a function of the cluster geometry with the goal, perhaps, to reconstruct the whole or at least some aspects of the cluster geometry. |

Time-dependent solution of the generalized Fano modelVariety of physical processes in quantum mechanics can be described as interaction of the so called discrete state with continuum. Resonant scattering can serve as a most typical example. Here, the metastable state, which is described by a square integrable wave function, corresponding to capture of the particle near the target, decays into the continuum of scattering states. When dealing with such a problem exponential decay of the discrete state is commonly assumed with the decay rate determined, for instance, through the lowest order of perturbation theory. However, the decay is exponential only in the case of a constant coupling between the discrete state and the continuum (i.e., independent of the energy of the discrete state) - so called Fano model. The goal of the proposed work will be numerical simulation of the time evolution in the case of a more realistic model with energy dependent coupling and study of its deviation from the expected exponential behavior. |

Rotating thin disc around a Schwarzschild black hole: properties of perturbative solutionČerné díry obklopené disky či tenkými prstenci jsou patrně centrálními objekty galaktických jader a některých rentgenových dvojhvězd. Gravitational lensing by combined continuous and discrete matterGravitational lenses are typically modeled either by a continuous mass distribution (in the case of strong and weak lensing by galaxies or galaxy clusters), or by a set of discrete point masses (in the case of microlensing by stars or stellar systems). However, continuously modeled astrophysical systems do have their discrete component: lensing galaxy clusters contain individual galaxies; lensing galaxies contain dwarf galaxies, globular clusters, and at a finer scale individual stars. The objective of the work is to test the influence of an added discrete component on the lensing of continuously modeled objects using simple models, and to assess potential implications for the analyses of observed lenses. |

Collisions of electrons with diatomic moleculesDuring electron collisions with diatomic molecules, the incoming electron is often captured into a resonant state producing a temporary molecular anion whose nuclear dynamics is different from that of a neutral molecule. As a result the molecule can be vibrationally excited, if the electron is again released, or it can dissociate, if the electron stays at one of the atoms. To construct a model describing the nuclear dynamics of these collisions, it is first necessary to calculate the potential-energy curves for both the neutral molecule and the negative molecular ion and also to perform the fixed-nuclei electron scattering calculations. Students will learn methods of quantum chemistry and the R-matrix method for calculation of electron scattering on molecules and will gain practical experience with such calculations for a specific diatomic system. |

Geodesics in the field of a perturbed black hole: where appears chaos?V poslední době jsme se se studenty věnovali geodetickému pohybu ve statickém a axiálně symetrickém poli černé díry obklopené tenkým diskem či prstencem. Semiclassical Monte-Carlo method in three particle scatteringSynthesis of molecules in the cosmic space is still not well understood. Conditions inside interstellar molecular clouds are so dramatically different from common laboratory conditions, that most of the processes that can take place there are not much explored. Quantum scattering theory describes such processes in principle exactly, but in practice the calculation is beyond computational power available even in the case of small molecules and we have to use clever approximations. A combination of the classical and quantum description of the reaction dynamics will be used in this thesis. Quantum calculation yields the interaction potential that governs the motions of the atomic nuclei described by equations of classical mechanics. In many molecular systems the potential contains so called conical intersections (diabolic points) [1]. Such potential is represented my multivalued, selfintersecting function. Student will learn basics of quantum scattering theory and application of semiclassical methods on reaction dynamics. The methods will be tested on model potentials motivated by collision of D- or antiproton with H2 molecule. |

Particle interaction with atoms in optical latticeTechniques of manipulation, trapping and cooling of atoms in optical laser field considerably developed during nineties. One of interesting applications is trapping of atoms in optical lattice, which is periodic potential formed by electromagnetic standing wave. Atoms in such lattice behave similarly like electrons or quasiparticles in solid state, but their properties could additionally be tuned with help of auxiliary electric or magnetic fields. Such configuration is a model system convenient for study of typical phenomena in many-particle physics in general. In this thesis we will study an interaction of excited atom or ion, which enters optical lattice in which additional (target) atoms are trapped. With proper choice of atoms, an electron can be released. This electron detachment has been studied in our group for individual target atoms. The goal of this thesis is to attempt to model such a process with multiple target atoms, which can lead to additional phenomena. Technically the student will solve one dimensional stationary Schrodinger equation in one dimensional periodic complex potential. |

Multimode vibrational dynamics of electron scattering from moleculeTheoretical description of electron-molecule collisions still represents a great challenge. In addition to involving many particles, this theory is complicated by contribution of electron continuum and breakage of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. All this problems are properly solved in the nonlocal resonance model theory [1,2]. This theory is used only for diatomic molecules. On the other hand, the equations of the nonlocal resonance model theory can easily be formulated for harmonic vibrations and solved in the basis of the eigefunctions the linear harmonic oscillator. Student will learn to calculate cross sections for vibrational excitation of the molecule in collision with electron. He will then generalize the method for harmonic vibrations in more dimensions. |

Analysis of the Stieltjes imaging method for the calculation of resonance widthsCalculation of resonance widths or decay rates of metastable states of atoms, molecules, and their ions represents very difficult problem for many-body quantum physics. The difficulty stems from the necessity of description of the electrons released to continuum. In practice, the continuum wave functions are often approximated using square-integrable functions that are widely used to describe bound states but cannot represent the scattered electron. However, the resulting pseudo-spectrum can still be used to calculate the resonance widths if the moment theory is applied. Even though this method is used rather routinely now, thorough analysis of its performance is missing in the literature. The goal of the work is to study the properties of the computational technique known as the Stieltjes imaging on the model one-dimensional resonant scattering problem and compare the acquired results with the exact solution. |

Geometry of 2+1 dimensional black holespráce by měla předložit přehled geometrie nízkodimenzionálních tzv. BTZ (Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli) černých děr. Tyto objekty lze získat identifikací části anti-deSitterova vesmíru v 2+1 dimenzi. Cílem práce by mělo být studovat, shrnout a pedagogicky vyložit geometrii těchto děr, studovat fázové přechody k prázdnému anti=de Sitterovu vesmíru a prostoročasu obsahujícímu bodové částice. |

Chaos in perturbed black-hole fieldsGeodetický pohyb kolem izolovaných stacionárních černých děr je plně integrabilní, avšak přítomnost dodatečného zdroje (např. disku či prstence) integrabilitu naruší a v systému se typicky objeví chaos. Tuto "robustní" skutečnost, která může mít astrofyzikální význam včetně observačních důsledků, jsme studovali různými metodami v přesných prostoročasech Weylova typu popisujících statickou a axiálně symetrickou soustavu černé díry obklopené tenkým diskem či prstencem. Záměrem tohoto návrhu je podrobit obdobnému studiu dynamiku pohybu testovacích částic v odpovídajících Newtonových polích, v nichž jsou některé obecně relativistické rysy (zejména existence horizontu) simulovány modifikací gravitačního potenciálu. Výsledky takového porovnání by byly dobrým ukazatelem použitelnosti (pseudo-)newtonovských aproximací při analýze dlouhodobých vývojů ve zmíněných polích. |

Modeling the Mach's principle in the post-Minkowskian approximation to general relativityTématem práce jsou význačné vlastnosti obecné teorie relativity jako je kalibrační volnost nebo gravitomagnetismus a jejich diskuze m.j. i z hlediska Machova principu. Protože přesné řešení Einsteinových rovnic představuje obtížnou úlohu, bude při výpočtech použita postminkovská aproximace poskytující možnost studovat společně pohyb částic modelujících jak hmotu, tak i pozorovatele, jeho inerciální systém a jím pozorované světelné paprsky. V takovýchto modelech působení hmoty na inerciální systém pozorovatele bude třeba nalézt měřitelné (a tedy kalibračně invariantní) veličiny a studovat závislosti mezi nimi. Tyto veličiny by měly charakterizovat např. rozložení hmoty či jejím pohybem způsobené roztáčení inerciálního systému vybraného pozorovatele. |

Swimming in spacetimeThe motion of mass points in a gravitational field can be described and calculated rather easily. However, in the case of bodies with internal degrees of freedom, the situation is substantially more involved. Two mass points connected by a massless strut the length of which changes in time can modify the parameters of their orbit even in the Newtonian gravitational field. There are also examples of simple, extended objects that modify their orbit as they move on curved surfaces. This suggests a similar phenomenon could take place in general relativity as well. Examination of the motion of mass-point pairs conforming to a given constraint shows this is indeed the case. Yet, there is still the issue of defining a physically plausible constraint, the center of mass or the geometric center of the system and also its energy. |

Thin discs and rings as sources of Weyl space-timesÚkolem studenta bude: (i) seznámit se s popisem (vakuových) statických a axiálně symetrických prostoročasů pomocí Weylovy metriky a s odpovídajícím tvarem Einsteinových rovnic; (ii) seznámit se s řešeními polních rovnic, jejichž zdrojem jsou tenké disky či prstence, a sepsat o nich krátký přehled. |

Measuring accretion disk properties from quasar microlensingWhen a distant quasar is gravitationally lensed by an intervening galaxy, several observable images of the quasar are formed by the gravitational field of the galaxy. In case the light of any of the images passes directly through the stellar population of the lensing galaxy, it is additionally influenced by all stars lying along its path. Taking into account the non-negligible angular motion of the quasar with respect to the caustic structure formed by the gravitational field of these stars, it follows that the flux of the image is temporally modulated, an effect known as quasar microlensing. The goal of the work is to explore the sensitivity of the respective light curve to the size of the radiating region of the quasar accretion disk, to its orientation, and to its surface brightness distribution. |

Analytic continuation in coupling constantThe goal of this project is to study analytic properties of bound state energies and resonance parameters by means of simple potentials (sum of Dirac delta functions). It is in principle possible to determine resonance parameters from the knowledge of bound state energies by analytic continuation in the coupling constants. It is assumed that the analytic continuation will be carried out by the statistical Padé approximation (type III Padé). |

Timeless dynamicsWhen attempting to join quantum theory and general theory of relativity (while retaining covariance) it was realized that differing nature of time in these theories presents a nontrivial obstacle to their fusion. In general relativity, hamiltonian is a constraint and thus vanishes on physical solutions. Since hamiltonian generates the time evolution (both classical and quantum), it raised a question whether time is a truly fundamental and necessary quantity. |

Cosmological models and their perturbations
|
Cosmological models and their perturbationsThe work will summarize the basic models of the universe based both on the Newtonian theory of gravity and, above all, on the Einstein equations of general relativity. Linear perturbations of these models will be analyzed and the role of various gauges (i.e., of suitable coordinates) for solving specific physical situations like a condensation of a spherical mass or rotational effects, possibly also gravitational waves, will be investigated. At present nonlinear perturbations of the second order are started to be studied; in future, it would be interesting to touch upon this mathematically very complicated topic as well. |

Space-times of Minkowski and Kerr from a circular orbitV teorii relativity se vždy znovu zdůrazňuje rozdíl mezi souřadnicovými složkami tenzorů a invarianty z nich spočítanými. V Minkowskiho případě se jedná o známý 'paradox rotujícího kotouče', v Kerrově prostoročasu do hry vstupuje i 'opravdová' gravitace, včetně rotačního strhávání inerciálních systémů. |

Dynamics of variable mass systemsIn this work we study dynamics of systems in which their mass can change. We start from general Newton's law of motion, and in equations of motion we consider momentum change connected with the change of mass. In the first part of work we formulate and solve equations of motion for different examples of such systems. Examples are divided into three groups. The first group include Buquoys' problems where the mass is a function of coordinates. The second group includes conveyor-belt problems where the mass is function of time. In third group we present falling of a drop in a cloud, a motion of plow and a rocket problem. In the second part of this work we study conservation of energy in a completely general case of variable mass systems. We present its formulation in several versions, and we demonstare its validity for most of examples included in the first part of this work. |

Conformally flat solutions of Einstein's equationsThe aim of this work is to study relations between some families of exact solutions of Einstein's gravitational field equations, in particular the conformally flat spacetimes with pure radiation (or analogous solutions of the algebraic type N) and a cosmological constant. Specifically, we present explicit transformations between the metric forms which have been recently found by Edgar and Ramos and solutions of this type found by Ozsváth, Robinson and Rózga that are known since 1980's. |

Geometric formulation of Lagrangian mechanicsIn the present work we study application of differential geometry to the Lagrangian formalism. In the first chapter we summarize the foundations of geometric formulation of Lagrangian mechanics, in particular we show the principal meaning of the tagent bundle of the configuration manifold and dynamical vector field which solves the Lagrange equations in their geometrical form. The Noether's theorem is also formulated and proved. The second chapter introduces other geometrical definitions related to the Lagrangian formalism, such as fiber space, lifts, second-order vector fields and Lagrangian vector fields. The existence of symplectic structure and Hamiltonian dynamics on the tangent bundle of the configuration manifold is also demonstrated. |

Geometric formulation of Hamiltonian mechanicsIn this work we study geometric formulation of Hamiltonian mechanics. At the beginning we look at situation, when the Hamiltonian function is time-independent. In this case our geometric arena is the n-dimensional symplectic manifold. After that we suppose time-dependent Hamiltonian function and we use 2n+1 dimensional extended phase space. Evolution of the mechanical system is given by integral curves of the vector field, which is determined by Hamilton's canonical equations. We also construct canonical transformations in both cases. In the end of this work we show geometric interpretation of the Hamiton-Jacobi equation. |
