Multi-black-hole gravitational field

We study dynamics of an extremally charged black hole on the background of two stationary, mutually orbiting extremally charged black holes, forming thus a seed binary system. We extend the two-body perturbative solution of vacuum Einstein-Maxwell equations, known from literature, to the three body system. Restricting to slow-motion approximation and motion at a large distance, we de- rive the corresponding three-body Lagrangian and investigate limits of evolution of little- and large-mass black hole. Motivated by physical intuition and in order to check our results, we compare the former with solution of geodesic equation of an extremally charged test-body on identical background. Our results mainly consist of interpretation and comparison of characteristic motions.

GHP and Weyl formalism for gravitational perturbations

The exact analytical solutions of Einstein's equations describing systems of astrophy- sical interest have not been found yet, and thus they have to be studied only as perturba- tions of known spacetimes. There are various ways to investigate these perturbations. One can look directly for perturbations of metric of the exact solution of Einstein's equations. In vacuum spacetimes of type D, it has proved advantageous to investigate perturbations in the GHP formalism by introducing the Debye potential. In this paper, we discuss the connection between these two approaches. We present a general procedure for translating the results from the Debye potential formalism to stationary axisymmetric perturbations of the Kerr metric. This procedure requires solving for a calibration vector. We show that both approaches lead to the same perturbation of the radiative components of the Weyl tensor, and we find a simple relation between these components.

Exact spacetimes in 2+1 gravity

We present a study of exact solutions to the coupled system of Einstein-Maxwell equations for Robinson-Trautman and Kundt geometries with a cosmological constant in 2+1 gravity. We also consider an electromagnetic field without any charges or currents. The equations are fully integrated for the nonexpanding Kundt family of spacetimes which only admit an aligned electromagnetic field, and for the aligned Robinson-Trautman class. A special subclass of these solutions is then identified as the charged black hole spacetime in 3D gravity. The nonaligned Robinson-Trautman solution decouples into a separated system of differential equations for the metric and the electromagnetic field. We show that the Robinson-Trautman spacetime admits a nonaligned electromagnetic field by finding a simple particular solution to the equations. Furthermore, we develop a new method of algebraic classification of spacetimes in three dimensions based on the projections of the Cotton tensor onto a suitable null basis. We then show that this classification is equivalent to the Petrov classification of the Cotton-York tensor in 2+1 gravity.

Gravitational perturbations in NP/GHP formalism

This work gets the reader acquainted with tetrad approaches to general theory of re- lativity (GTR), namely with Newman - Penrose (NP) and Geroch - Held - Perose (GHP) formalisms. Obtained expressions are expressed in coordinates. Subsequently, this work concerns with the perturbation techniques in GTR, including both metric perturbation and the method of superpotential, the latter being more common in GHP formalism. Following is the recapitulation of important results based on this method. The core of the work is in generalization of known results for spacetimes with ac- celeration (so called C-metric) and checking previous results using computation in the Wolfram Mathematica program. In order not to work just with rather complicated GHP and NP formalisms, the main result is checked also by transcription into coordinate par- tial derivatives.

Model of coherent electron dynamics in molecules

An ultrashort laser pulse photoionizing the molecule produces a superposition of a few cationic states. The coupling between the electrons and the nuclei has been predicted to cause fast decoherence. In this thesis, a two-dimensional model of coupled electron- nuclear dynamics in molecules is constructed. It is based on a harmonic potential in the nuclear degree of freedom and a double harmonic potential representing two centers that bind the electrons. The electronic potential's dependence on the nuclear configuration facilitates the coupling. Thanks to the simplicity of the model, it is numerically exactly solvable. We use the basis of its eigenstates to calculate the evolution of any initial state. Several quantities are used to measure decoherence and unravel the underlying mecha- nisms. Especially useful is the Wigner quasiprobability distribution. A few fundamental cases of the model are analyzed, and it is used to approximate the coherence dynamics in the normal modes of the H2O+ cation.

Structure and evolution of stars deformed by a nearby companion

The tidal field from a nearby binary companion affects the structure and evolution of stars. We successfully applied the Kippenhahn averaging formalism to the Roche potential and used the method to formulate approximate models of tidally deformed primaries in close binary systems. We considered both the detached and the contact configurations and neglected chemical composition evolution. These tidally deformed models are thermally stable. We explored the parametric dependence of the results on three quantities: mass ratio q in the binary, surface equipotential C of the primary or the fill-out factor F(C), and mass M1 of the primary. We found that the depth of the surface convective layer of low mass primaries in- creased due to tidal deformation. All models decreased their effective temperature when compared to their spherical counterparts. Our results also predict a positive correlation between the effective temperature and the fill-out factor for contact systems. Further- more, the temperature negatively correlates with the mass ratio of the deformed system. Finally, when isolating the tidal deformation effects, a jump in temperatures was found around 1.2 M⊙ for most fill-out factors. These findings could help to explain the observa- tionally reported dichotomy of contact binary systems at the temperature...

Magnetic fields of current loops around black holes

We summarize and explain the mathematical procedure that allows us to find the closed form of the magnetic field generated by a test current loop in Kerr spacetime. We consider axisymmetric placement of the loop for all three cases of the Kerr background: below-extreme black hole, extreme black hole, and naked singularity. The field is obtained by differentiating the effective Green function of the Debye potential, which is expressed in terms of elliptic integrals.

Two-dimensional model of electron collisions with molecules

In this master thesis we study convergence of selected iterative methods applied to linear systems originating from the finite element method, dis- crete variable representation and exterior complex scaling in the context of models of electron collisions with molecules. Benchmarks and comparisons with direct methods are made and convergence of methods is analyzed for a one-dimensional two-channel model and a more realistic two-dimensional model of four different molecular systems. Along the way, a review of the mentioned numerical methods and solvers is presented as well as a discussion of the sparsity patterns and numbers of non-zero elements of the used matrix representations. Finally, possible pathologies of preconditioners are shown.

Gravitational waves in expanding universes

Gravitational waves in expanding universes

In the present work we are analysing the asymptotic behaviour of vacuum spacetimes describing gravitational waves in universes with anisotropic expansion. The thesis is divided into two main parts. In the first chapter we review cylindrical gravitational waves and their cosmological generalizations; Bondi-Sachs formalism, Penrose’s null infinity and the peeling property of the Riemann tensor are summarized. Symmetry reduction, a (2+1)-dimensional formalism, is presented in detail and used in calculations. Generalization of the symmetry reduction to other dimensions and relation to Brans-Dicke theory is carried out. In the second chapter we analyse solutions describing cosmological gravitational waves proposed in the literature and discuss their relation to boost-rotation symmetric spacetimes. After utilizing the symmetry reduction, Kasner and Bianchi VI models are chosen as background solutions. The behaviour of the metric is encoded in a single function, a solution to the linear wave equation. The full solution is then a superposition of the gravitational wave representing, for example, pulses, and the background one. We calculate the Riemann and the Cotton tensor components of the 3-spacetimes and discuss the conformal completion. A comparison with four-dimensional behaviour is also made. We find that solutions with expanding backgrounds are asymptotically interesting, but fail to be asymptotically flat, both in 3 and 4 dimensions.

Mathematical modeling of vibrational dynamics in electron scattering from molecule.

Theme of this thesis is follow up of Bcl thesis [1] devoted to numerical methods of solution of system of equations describing electron scattering from molecule. Mathematically it is boundary value problem for system of Schrodinger (Helmholtz) partial differential equations. This system would be elliptic problem except to an integral term that describes a possible detachment of an electron which makes the problem rather nonstandard. Usual way to solve this problem in physics community is to expand the unknown functions (solutions) into basis in the Hilbert space which transforms the problem into system of linear equations for the coefficients with sparse matrix. The author of [1] tested the iteration matrix methods for solving this system and compared their efficiency. She studied two dimensional problem. This work will be devoted to one of the open questions issuing from [1]. It can be any one of following: 1) To attempt of weak formulation of the problem including integral term and resolving of mathematical issues. 2) Using the previous approach but for some generalization of the physical model, i.e. solve the problem of higher dimensionality (natural for 3atomic molecules is 3D or 4D in PDE formulation), include other anharmonic terms. 3) We solved the boundary value problem with Dirichlet condition. For molecules that can dissociate it is necessary to include the outgoing boundary condition. 4) Attempt to find convenient preconditioner for some of these problems.

Stability of stars undergoing rapid mass loss

When a star in a binary system evolves and expands, it can transfer mass to its companion. The mass transfer can proceed on nuclear, thermal, or dynamical timescale of the mass-losing star. The dynamical mass transfer is of particular interest, because it is believed that it leads to catastrophic interaction of the binary components accompanied by tremendous loss of mass, angular momentum, and energy. This phase, often called common envelope evolution, is a crucial step in the formation of close binaries composed of compact objects (white dwarfs, neutron stars, black holes), which includes progenitors of gravitational wave sources detected by LIGO. The goal of this project is to deepen the understanding of stability of binary stars to dynamic mass loss. The problem will be explored using appropriate methods or their combination (semi-analytic models, state-of-the-art stellar evolution simulations, and potentially also multi-dimensional simulations), depending on how the work proceeds and interests of the student. The aim is determining updated conditions of instability for a wide range of stars.

Angular momentum loss from binary stars due to stellar winds

Angular momentum loss dramatically affects the orbit of binary stars and consequently their evolution. Looking into this topic more closely is timely because of interest in evolutionary pathways leading to formation of compact object binaries and gravitational wave sources. The goal of this project is to learn about evolution of massive binaries, identify evolutionary stages critically affected by angular momentum loss by stellar winds, and update previous ballistic calculations of stellar winds leaving binary stars in various configurations. Part of this project is also preparation of results from Bachelor thesis for publication and presentation of these results at a suitable international venue.

Shape of a Kerr gravitational field

Práce by měla přispět k ilustraci a pochopení geometrických vlastností Kerrova prostoročasu. Díky zakřivení prostoročasu v obecné relativitě mají i velmi základní řešení Einsteinových rovnic složitou geometrii. Zajímavosti přicházejí zejména s rotací, poněvadž v Einsteinově teorii "cítí" prostoročas rotaci zdroje (jako by měl určitou "viskozitu") a ko-rotuje do jisté míry spolu s ním.

The fields of current loops around black holes

Study of time evolution of metastable states in quantum mechanics

In the study of resonant scattering problems or decay processes it is usually assumed that the mestastable states decay exponentially with resonance (decay) width determined in the first order of perturbation theory by the Fermi golden rule or by the imaginary part of the corresponding pole of the S-matrix in the complex energy plane. This model is, however, based on a number of simplifying assumptions which are often violated in real systems. For instance, if the resonance is too close to the threshold of the decay channel or in the case of two or more overlapping resonances. In the decay processes, specific way of preparation of the metastable state is also neglected in this approach. Auger spectra acquired from interaction of matter with photons or electrons are usually different, therefore, the course of the decay process is obviously affected by the specific shape of the initial discrete state corresponding to the same resonance. The goal of the present work is to study the influence of these factors on the decay processes and observable quantities.

Physics of extended objects in strong gravitational fields

Jelikož jde o nelokální interakci s gravitačním polem, lze očekávat, že výsledný posun bude souviset s geodetickou deviací a tedy s lokální křivostí daného prostoročasu. Dalším zkoumaným případem bude relativistický pohyb "činky" po přibližně kruhové dráze v okolí kompaktních zdrojů gravitačního pole, kdy může docházet k posunu ISCO a dalších významných trajektorií.

The goal of the work is a visualization of black hole spacetimes using causal diagrams and spatial sections. Spacetimes with accelerating sources

In this work, exact spacetimes representing accelerated sources will be studied, in particular recently found vacuum solution of Einstein’s gravitational field equations for accelerated non-rotating black hole with a NUT parameter. The main task will be mathematical analysis and physical interpretation, investigation of relations to classic Plebański- Demiański class of accelerating black-hole spacetimes, or their generalization. Another possible extension of the work could be a study of exact solution representing Bonnor’s photon rocket with acceleration.

Probabilistic Spacetimes

This project is devoted to the study of a new mathematical concept of "probabilistic spacetime", suggested as a possible effective quantum generalization of the spacetime used in the general theory of relativity. The probabilistic spacetime does not employ a common metric tensor but rather an object that associates a real-valued distribution function to every pair of four-vectors from the tangent space above given point. Such a spacetime may, on a microscopic level, reduce its degrees of freedom, providing qualitatively different and potentially attractive properties.

Charged particles in spacetimes with an electromagnetic field

In the first part of the thesis, the student will investigate electrogeodesics in Kerr-Newman-(anti) de Sitter spacetime and determine how they differ from the geodesic structure of the spacetime and from the electrogeodesic structure of Kerr-Newman. The student will particularly focus on the near-horizon regions and also on the situation when the generally different horizons merge. In the second part of the thesis, the student will address the strongly debated possibility of modeling Hawking radiation using particles tunneling through a horizon. First, the student will study the relevant literature and summarize arguments both for and against the method. Using model situations, the student will then attempt to illustrate the technique and possibly decide whether it can be applied.

Gravitational waves in cosmology

Although directly undetected so far, gravitational waves play an important role in the development of general relativity. Not only they might provide a new astronomical window to the universe but they play a role in models curved dominantly by their presence. These spacetimes are found among both exact solutions and using approximative techniques - namely high-frequency perturbations. Since exact radiative spacetimes posses preferred null direction they may serve as useful background for adding high-frequency radiation and thus study, for example, a stability of different properties of these spacetimes. One may also study radiation in asymptotically non-flat blackhole models with cosmological exterior. Substantial interest regarding topologically nontrivial models is devoted to the Gowdy universe, namely its T^3 version. The analysis in the simple polarized case was already carried out, but more interesting situations cannot be treated exactly. In such a situation perturbative approach might help in gaining insight into an exact solution behaviour.

Investigation of quantum reaction dynamics using semiclassical method.

Synthesis of molecules in the cosmic space is still not well understood. Conditions inside interstellar molecular clouds are so dramatically different from laboratory, that most of the processes that can take place there are not much explored. Quantum scattering theory describes such processes in principle exactly, but in practice the calculation is beyond computational power available even in the case of small molecules and we have to use clever approximations. A combination of the classical and quantum description of the reaction dynamics will be used in this thesis. Quantum calculation yields the interaction potential that governs the motions of the atomic nuclei described by equations of classical mechanics. We will furthermore focus on the problem where the potential contains so called conical intersections (diabolic points) [1]. Such potential is represented my multivalued, selfintersecting function. Student will learn basics of quantum scattering theory and application of semiclassical methods on reaction dynamics. The methods will be tested on model potentials motivated by collision of O- ion with H2 molecule.

Computing resonance widths using square integrable basis

Numerical computation of phase shifts, resonance widths and other quantities relevant in quantum scattering theory depends strongly on the quality of the representation of continuum. In study of real polyatomic systems, however, most of available methods rely on the description of continuum in square-integrable (usually Gaussian) basis. It allows to utilize efficient quantum chemistry software developed for bound states description, however, the representation of the particle in continuum is poor. Moreover, the desired quantities are usually not available directly but only through additional interpolation and renormalization of the discrete pseudo-continuum. The method of Stieltjes imaging, based on moment theory, is often used for this purpose. The goal of the proposed project is to study numerical properties of this kind of approach in combination with different types and qualities of the basis sets.

The main objective is to give interpretation of the class of so called B-metrics, a natural counterpart of A-metrics that include well known black hole spacetimes of the Schwarzschild type. The key is to clarify relations between the Kundt and the Plebanski form of these nonexpanding spacetimes which may help to understand the meaning of the corresponding coordinates.

Quasilocal horizons

Since event horizon is defined using null infinity it is not a useful notion in various general situations, e.g. in numerical relativity, for dynamical spacetimes with highly nontrivial evolution or for spacetimes that are not asymptotically flat, like cosmological solution. Therefore, different definitions of so called quasilocal horizons were developed over the years. They all share the same condition for locating the horizon, namely the vanishing of expansion of null congruence orthogonal to the spatial slice of the horizon. Black hole thermodynamics or area increase laws might be formulated for them and their stability or uniqueness were studied extensively. In quite general circumstances the blackhole type horizons are known to be spacelike or null while the cosmological horizon might be timelike - usually being referred to as timelike membrane since it does not posses the natural properties of black hole horizon and can be traversed from both sides.

Chaos in deformed black-hole fields

Already in his bachelor thesis, V. Witzany wrote a sympletic integrator and employed it for a study of free motion in a pseudo-Newtonian field mimicking the gravitational system of a black hole surrounded by a thin disc or ring. He should now finish this study, comparing the results obtained for several different simple potentials with those yield by an exact general relativistic system. The comparison should be performed on Poincaré diagrams endowed with information provided by some of the Lyapunoav-type coefficients (probably the MEGNO) or recurrence-analysis quantifiers (probably the DIV indicator). It would also be desirable to check the results by the code recently developed by Seyrich&Lukes-Gerakopoulos. Finally, a more advanced future programme would be to extend the analysis to a stationary case (involving rotation), using the metrics found by linear-perturbation techniques.

Study of analytic behavior of scattering quantities in the nonlocal resonance model

Nonlocal resonance model turned out to be a very useful tool for the description of electron-molecule and ion-atom collisions. It was successfully applied for calculation of cross section for processes of vibrational excitation, dissociative attachment and associative detachment of electron in diatomic molecule and it was used for both explanation of the observed structures and prediction of new effects, that were later experimentally verified. Its interpretation potential was, however, not fully exploited. Goal of this thesis is to investigate analytical behavior of different cross sections calculated within the nonlocal resonance model in the vicinity of thresholds and resonances and to find analytical formulae for it. It is also possible to investigate the behavior the the wavefunctions near observed features in the cross sections and to investigate its component in the electron continuum, that was previously neglected in the interpretation of the observed phenomena.

Properties of bound orbits in strong gravitational fields

Properties of bound orbits in strong gravitational fields

In extremely strong gravitational fields in the vicinity of black holes, interesting deviations from Newtonian dynamics may arise. These include, for instance, reversal in dependence of the orbital acceleration on angular velocity. This general relativistic effect occurs below the free photon orbit and so far it has been mainly studied on circular trajectories in stationary axisymmetric spacetimes. It would be interesting to learn how the effect manifests itself on polar orbits and whether something similar also arises in other problems as the spin-curvature interaction or a generation of EM field by test current ring. It could also be checked whether the acceleration behaves "anomalously" in the vicinity of other ultra-compact sources like, e.g., toroidal black holes or cylindrical sources.

Gravitational microlensing by a few-body system

An extrasolar analog of the Sun - Jupiter - Saturn system has been found recently by detecting its gravitational influence on the passage of light from a more distant star (Gaudi et al. 2008). At the same time, gravitational microlensing by a system of three bodies (star + 2 planets, star + planet + moon, 3 stars) has not yet been satisfactorily analyzed theoretically. What has been fairly well explored is gravitational microlensing by two bodies (2 stars, star + planet), and analogous techniques can be used even for astrophysically relevant systems of three or four bodies. The objective of this work is to explore the character of microlensing by different systems of three (or even four) bodies.

Shape of the gravitational field of the Kerr spacetime

The Kerr metric is an exact stationary axially symmetric solution of the Einstein equations, which describes gravitational field around a rotating body. There is no simple answer to the question of shape of this field looks like as it is not clear what are field lines and equipotentials. In the Newtonian case and in the Schwarzschild spacetime of a non-rotating source field lines are integral curves of the gravitational acceleration of static observers and equipotentials are surfaces of constant value of this acceleration. In the Kerr rotating case, due to the general relativistic effect of dragging of inertial frames, it is not clear which congruence is to be considered the best generalization of the static (non-rotating) observer - there are more such natural generalizations. In this thesis we determine what is the shape of the gravitational equipotentials if we choose one of the privileged congruences of the class of stationary observers on circular orbits, namely (i) the observers at rest with respect to infinity, (ii) the observers with null angular momentum, (iii) Carter's (canonical) observers and (iv) the observers with the extremal value of acceleration. For each of these congruences surfaces of constant value of acceleration are found numerically and some coordinate dependent as well as invariant characteristics of these surfaces are compared. It turns out that the extremally accelerated congruence behaves most natural in this sense whereas the Carter's congruence seems to be the least convenient.
