Dear applicants,

the application form is now closed is now open (since December 15, 2025). Applications sent directly to the supervisors will not be considered. The projects for 2026 are published since December 8, 2025.

Applicants must have a degree equivalent to MSc in Physics, Astronomy, or Mathematics and must provide a corresponding diploma by the end of September 2026. For more details on eligibility, application and admission procedure, see Frequently Asked Questions.

Please submit the following information in the application form below:

  • CV
  • statement describing past research experience and future plans
  • transcripts of all courses and grades
  • copies of academic certificates (Bc and MSc, if available)
  • date of (expected) award of MSc degree
  • copy of Bc and MSc thesis, if available, with English abstract
  • other optional materials, for example, copies of English language certificates if available, published papers, etc.
  • contacts to two to three referees who will send letters of recommendation directly to the ITP

Applicants should indicate the subject areas or specific projects of interest. Please feel free to select multiple areas or projects.

Timeline of selection 2025/2026

  • December 8, 2025 – publication of projects
  • December 15, 2025 – application form will open
  • January 15, 2026
    • Deadline for submission of applications for supervision and funding through this website.
    • Letters of recommendation should be received by the same date.
  • January-February 2026
    • selection of shortlisted candidates by individual project supervisors,
    • invitation for interviews (remote or in-person), first offers of funding and supervision. (Note that each project supervisor has their own schedule regarding interviews and offers.)
    • the board review the candidates
    • Please monitor this website to see which projects remain open (= no suitable candidate was selected yet). We will not email rejections.
  • March 31, 2026 – selected candidates who accepted offers of funding and supervision from their project supervisor must submit formal application for admission to PhD studies at Faculty of Mathematics and Physics by this date.
  • end of June 2026 – entrance exams in Physics and/or English. This applies only to applicants who do not get one or both parts of the entrance exam waived.
  • July-September 2026 – formal acceptance for PhD studies, processing of documents for visa, if applicable.
  • October 1, 2026 – start of new academic year, beginning of PhD studies
