Basic information

The Mathematical Institute of Charles University was founded by Eduard Čech, a prominent Czech mathematician, in 1956. Compared to the beginnings of its existence, the current research and pedagogical activities of the Mathematical Institute are in balance. There are currently two academic divisions in the department: the Division of analysis and geometry and the Division of mathematical modelling. The individual groups organize traditional seminars and regularly organize international conferences such as the Winter school of geometry and physics, Mathematical aspects of fluid flows or mathematical modelling, Numerical analysis and scientific computing.

A special subsection at the institute takes care of the operation of the computer network in the entire School of Mathematics (Karlín building) and the operation of computer laboratories (60 computers).

The prestigious mathematical journal Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae (CMUC) is edited at the Mathematical Institute. This journal was founded by E. Čech in 1960 and has a significant position among professional mathematical journals.
