Karel Urbánek Fund

for Study Stays in the Academic Year 2026/2027

  1. The Karel Urbánek Fund (hereinafter “the Fund”) is established to support the study of students of MFF UK enrolled in accredited doctoral programs at MFF UK, for study stays at American universities or research institutions.
  2. Students of the above-mentioned doctoral programs, whether in full-time or combined form of study, who have passed the English exam by the application deadline, may apply for support.
  3. Support from the Fund is limited to covering travel and living expenses of selected applicants, either through travel orders or invoices for accommodation, or in the form of a scholarship. The Fund’s resources cannot be used to cover tuition fees. The maximum amount of support is capped at 22,000 USD.
  4. The duration of a study stay funded by the Fund is at least one semester and at most one academic year.
  5. Together with the application for support, the applicant shall submit:
    1. the applicant’s CV,
    2. a detailed study plan for the stay in the USA,
    3. the name and a brief CV of the person who will guarantee the scientific part of the project on the American side,
    4. a financial plan indicating the requested amount of support; the plan must include not only the funds requested from the Fund but also any additional resources (personal funds, Charles University Mobility Fund, etc.) if they are combined to cover the stay,
    5. a statement from the host institution in the USA confirming that the proposed study plan can be carried out,
    6. and, where applicable, confirmation that the U.S. institution will provide the applicant with financial or in-kind support for the stay, if such support is assumed in the financial plan.
  6. All documents mentioned above must be submitted in English.
  7. The applicant must deliver their personally signed application no later than Friday, May 29, 2026, either to the Dean’s Office of MFF UK, Ke Karlovu 3, 121 16 Prague 2, or electronically to the email address: <Terezie.Pavkova@matfyz.cuni.cz>.
  8. The Dean decides on granting support based on the recommendation of the selection committee.
  9. An applicant who was not selected due to insufficient financial resources may apply again in the next round. All required documents must be resubmitted.
  10. Support cannot be granted repeatedly.
