The Czech Republic will be represented on the leadership of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence (EurAI) for the first time. Prof. Roman Barták of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Charles University has been elected to the EurAI Board, the association’s governing body. EurAI promotes research, education and the application of artificial intelligence across Europe. The election took place at the IJCAI-ECAI conference in Bremen, where Prof. Barták was elected as one of four new Board members from a field of eleven nominees.

The EurAI Board coordinates the activities of national AI associations across Europe and is responsible, among other things, for overseeing the ECAI conference, the ASAI and ESSAI summer schools, and the publication of The European Journal on Artificial Intelligence (formerly AI Communications).

“Being elected to the EurAI Board is a sign of trust from the national associations that elect its members. It gives us an opportunity to contribute directly to important decisions concerning AI, not only at the European level. This makes the appointment particularly valuable for us, as the involvement of Czech experts beyond specialised professional communities is still relatively limited,” says Prof. Roman Barták.

Prof. Barták’s research interests include automated planning, constraint satisfaction, knowledge representation, machine learning and robotics. Alongside his academic work, he collaborates with industry and is actively involved in science communication. He is an internationally recognised expert in AI and a EurAI Fellow, a distinction awarded by the association in recognition of long-standing and significant contributions to the field. He was also the first European recipient of the Douglas D. Dankel II Award, presented for outstanding contributions to AI and to building the AI community. He is an AAAI Fellow and received the AI Award in 2019.
