International Visits Mark the End of the Semester
Towards the end of the summer semester, the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics welcomed representatives of universities from New Zealand, Australia and Taiwan. The discussions focused primarily on opportunities for developing research collaboration, joint project activities and other forms of international cooperation.
On May 19, 2026, the Faculty hosted a four-member delegation from Auckland University of Technology, led by Dean Prof. Suzanne Wilkinson. The delegation also included Dr Stacy Vallis, Assoc. Prof. Sam Madanian and Prof. B. L. William Wong. The guests were welcomed by the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, together with the Vice-Dean for Research and International Affairs Prof. Zdeněk Doležal and Vice-Dean for Computer Science Prof. Jiří Sgall.
Particular attention was paid to opportunities for research collaboration and joint participation in Horizon Europe projects, especially in the fields of artificial intelligence, materials science, mathematical modelling and risk management.
This was followed on June 9 by a visit from two representatives of Macquarie University, a strategic partner of Charles University. Katie Gamble, Director of Strategy and Planning (Graduate Research), and Dr Rahel Cramer, Global Programs Coordinator, were welcomed to the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics by the Vice-Dean for Research and International Relations Prof. Zdeněk Doležal. The meeting took place as part of their visit to Charles University.
The aim of the meeting was to introduce both institutions to one another and to identify opportunities for further cooperation. The discussion focused in particular on possibilities for joint research activities, participation in Horizon Europe projects, student exchanges and the use of the cotutelle framework agreement.
As part of both visits, the guests toured the X-ray Laboratory of the Department of Condensed Matter Physics, guided by Dr. Milan Dopita.
Thirdly, on July 2, the Faculty met for the second time with representatives of the Academy of Innovative Semiconductor and Sustainable Manufacturing, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU AISSM). The aim of the meeting was to further strengthen research cooperation in the fields of semiconductor physics, optoelectronics, photonics, AI-driven semiconductor technologies and next-generation materials research.
The six-member delegation, led by Dean Prof. Wei-Chou Hsu, was welcomed by Vice-Dean for Research and International Affairs Prof. Zdeněk Doležal, Vice-Dean for Physics Assoc. Prof. Jiří Pavlů, and Vice-Dean for Development Prof. Jan Franc. The meeting was also attended by a number of the Faculty's academic staff, namely Prof. Eduard Belas, Prof. Roman Grill, Prof. Jana Kalbáčová Vejpravová and Dr. Gilbert Pi, as well as representatives of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Prague (TECO) and a representative of the International Relations Office of Charles University.
The programme included a number of presentations. Among other topics, Prof. Belas presented the initiative to establish a semiconductor centre at Charles University. Following a joint discussion, the participants toured selected laboratories under the guidance of Prof. Belas and Assoc. Prof. Jiří Pospíšil. The meeting concluded with a joint informal lunch.
