English Studies at MFF UK
English language courses are listed as optional courses. However, every student of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics is obliged to pass the final departmental English exam. The exam is the same for students of all levels. Students usually sit for the exam in the fourth semester of their bachelor study programme.
Students must register for the exam in SIS under code NJAZ091.
Preparatory English courses
The Department of Language Education provides students with a four-semester preparation programme for the exam: two teaching hours a week for higher levels – codes NJAZ070, 072, 074, 090 (C – intermediate, D – advanced) and/or four teaching hours a week for lower levels – codes NJAZ071, 073, 075, 089 ( B – pre-intermediate).
For each course successfully passed, students will receive 1 credit in the faculty credit system as well as an additional 5 bonus points to be credited towards the final departmental English exam. A maximal total of 20 bonus points is allowed.
Course requirements include: written tests (grammatical and lexical tests, listening tests, reading comprehension tests and specialized English tests), class work and class attendance.

In all semesters, students will use the textbook Křepinská A., Bubeníková M., Mikuláš M.: Angličtina pro studenty MFF UK. Praha: Matfyzpress, 2013.
Placement: 1st year students who attend the introductory workshop at the University Training Centre at Albeř are given an English placement test to determine which level the student should register for. Those who do not attend this workshop must register in Prague, and the level they choose is left to their own discretion.
