Unveiling Altermagnets: Experimental Evidence and Spin-Symmetry Characteristics

Since 2020, a new branch of magnetic materials, altermagnets, has been theoretically identified, in addition to the conventional ferromagnets and antiferromagnets. The exclusively distinct spin-symmetry characteristics of altermagnets are the opposite-spin sublattices connected by a real-space rotation, but not connected by a translation or inversion. Such symmetry has unconventional physical consequences.

Hidden Symmetry Revealed

In a recent letter by Peter Zalom from FZU, Martin Žonda, and Tomáš Novotný from our department, a novel approach to understanding interacting quantum dots coupled to multiple superconducting leads, based on a so far hidden symmetry, has been unveiled. These hybrid nano systems have the potential to be used as building blocks of the future superconducting electronics devices. As also revealed in the letter, they can be tuned to serve as superconducting diodes or even transistors.

Outcome of large international cooperation published in Nature Communications

Dr. M. Vališka’s team has successfully prepared high-quality single crystals of UTe2 specifically tailored for quantum oscillation studies. Utilizing these samples, the Cambridge group, led by A. Eaton, conducted a series of experiments in high magnetic field facilities, followed by advanced modelling to assess the potential geometries of Fermi sheets in UTe2.
