In accordance with the Competitive Hiring Process Code of Charles University the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of Charles University announces opening of the following scientific postdoc positions with submission deadline January 31, 2023

School of Physics

Postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Surface and Plasma Science, CUNI MFF, in the field of atomic, molecular and optical physics.

ID of the position: 202301-PD-KFPP

Qualification requirements: The candidate should have experience in the confinement of charged particles in radio frequency traps and Doppler cooling. In terms of technical skills, we expect the ability to design microwave circuits, draw in CAD programs and perform numerical simulations (Comsol).

We require the ability to work in a team and independently in a rapidly evolving environment. Interest in the problems of interaction of light with electrons and ions, elementary processes in plasma and photonics is an advantage.

Project aim: The work will take place in the group of Dr Michal Hejduk (https://mhejduk.com) within the project funded by the PRIMUS program of Charles University. The project aims to study the interaction of electrons with ions cooled well below 1 K and to develop methods to control this process through the interaction of particles with external electromagnetic fields.

The main task of the postdoc will be to complete the design of the experimental apparatus – the Paul trap operating at a frequency of several GHz for trapping electrons – and to supervise its commissioning. They will also develop research cooperation with groups in the Czech Republic, England and Japan.

Length of contract: The contract will be concluded for one year.

Expected starting date is March 1, 2023, and is negotiable.

Postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Low Temperature Physics, CUNI MFF, in the VP2 wage class in the field of condensed matter physics.

ID of the position: 202301-PD-KFNT

Qualification requirements: Candidates should have experience in handling cryogenic systems (e.g., liquid helium transfers), be capable of basic CAD design, building electronic circuits and have some understanding of the physics of superfluid helium-4. Experience with cleanroom nanofabrication and/or quantum turbulence is welcome, but not required.

Candidates are expected to be capable of both working independently and in a team. Self-motivated candidates with interest in the fields of turbulence or superfluidity are preferred.

Project aim: The position will be supervised by Dr. Emil Varga (superfluid.troja.mff.cuni.cz) within the project funded by the PRIMUS program of Charles University. The aim of the project is to study the behavior of superfluid helium-4 confined to quasi two-dimensional nanofluidic systems, specifically two-dimensional quantum turbulence and the Kosterlitz-Thouless topological phase transition.

The tasks of postdoc will include help in design and commissioning of a helium cryostat capable of withstanding rotation with stringent requirements on temperature stability; design and fabrication of on-chip nanofluidic systems; data collection, analysis and preparation of publications.

Length of contract: The contract duration is one year, with possible extension.

Expected starting date is March 1, 2023, and is negotiable.

Postdoctoral position at the Institute of Particle and Nuclear Physics, CUNI MFF, in the field of theoretical nuclear physics.

ID of the position: 202301-PD-UCJF1

Qualification requirements: Ph.D. degree (or equivalent) in a relevant area. The applicant should be experienced in theoretical nuclear physics with an emphasis on nuclear structure. Experience with nuclear microscopic models or quantum many-body computational methods is advantageous.

Project aim: This work will be done in the group of doc. Milan Krtička as a part of the Czech Science Foundation project 23-06439S “Collective dynamics of nuclear electromagnetic excitations”. The project is oriented to the developments of novel microscopic methods for description of nuclear collective nuclear excitations.

Length of contract: The contract will be signed for one year with a possible extension.

Expected starting date is March 1, 2023, and is negotiable.

Postdoctoral position at the Institute of Particle and Nuclear Physics, CUNI MFF, in the field of neutrino physics.

ID of the position: 202301-PD-UCJF2

Qualification: Academic title Ph.D. in the nuclear or particle physics or similar. Knowledge of particle physics in the field of neutrinos. At least two-year experience in the large international experiment, which preferably focuses on the investigation of neutrinos. Great knowledge of spoken and written English. Good communication skills and ability to work both in the small research team and large international collaboration.

The position is focused on the development, construction and exploration of the potential of the international Hyper-Kamiokande experiment in Japan. Foreign and domestic business travel is expected for this position.

Expected starting date is March 1, 2023, and it is negotiable. Expected end of contract 31 December 2024

Postdoctoral position at the Institute of Particle and Nuclear Physics, CUNI MFF, in experimental particle physics in the field of heavy-ion collisions

ID of the position: 202301-PD-UCJF3

The researcher is expected to hold a Ph.D. degree in particle or nuclear physics or an equivalent. They need to have a profound experience with data analysis and software of experiment ATLAS. They need to be authors of published articles in heavy-ion physics.

The researcher is expected to participate in the experimental program of the heavy-ion working group at the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. Foreign and domestic travel is expected for this position.

Expected starting date is March 1, 2023, and it is negotiable. Expected end of contract 31 December 2024

Postdoctoral position at the Institute of Particle and Nuclear Physics, CUNI MFF, in the field of physics at the NA62 experiment at CERN

ID of the position: 202301-PD-UCJF4

Qualifications: academic degree of Ph.D. in nuclear or particle physics or in a related field, experience from a foreign postdoctoral stay in experimental particle physics, at least one year of experience in K-meson physics are required. Foreign and domestic travel is expected for this position.

Expected starting date is March 1, 2023, and it is negotiable. Expected end of contract 31 December 2024
